Final Report

Summary

The final report summarizes the research conducted on the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts Center. The purpose of the research is to examine and identify the baseline mechanical systems that needs an improvement. The depth of this report mainly focuses on implementing alternative solutions in place of the existing mechanical systems. The current design contains 14 rooftop air handling units with reheat variable air volume boxes that serve all the zones, 2 air cooled chillers, and 4 high efficiency boilers. The report investigates an application of dedicated outdoor air unit with total energy recovery wheel and desiccant wheel as a replacement to the conventional rooftop unit. Moreover, the air distribution method as underfloor air distribution will also be analyzed. These design alternatives will be implemented only in spaces where applicable. The primary goal of these design alternatives is to create thermally acceptable and comfortable occupant zones, reduce energy use, and improve acoustics of the conventional system. An acoustical analysis was performed to confirm the acceptable reverberation time in the Parmer Hall and the compliance of the of the alternative system with ASHRAE standards. The second breadth was focused on lighting load reduction.
